For 4 years now Floyd Mayweather has retained the number one spot as the highest paid and richest athlete in the world. The boxer maid a whooping sum of $275 million in one fight with Conor McGregor. This quickly helped him retain the number 1 spot for the 4th time in 7 years.
In 2016 and 2017 Cristiano Ronaldo held the number one spot but has been displaced by Mayweather. Currently, Cristiano Ronaldo is number 3 as football rival Lionel Messi grabs the number 2 spots with his recently signed deals.

This year, athletes from 11 different sports made the list. Basket ballers (NBA) had the lion share by claiming 40 positions out of the top 100.
The National Football League (NFL) comes second by claiming 18 positions in the top 100 for 2019, the richest NFL player is Matt Ryan- $67.3 million
Baseball comes third by claiming 14 positions.
Soccer comes 4th with 9 footballers making the list.
Golf has 5 athletes in the top 100.
Boxing has 4 athletes in the top 100. Anthony Joshua ($39 million)
Tennis also has 4 athletes.
Racing had 3 athletes making the top 100 list.
Mixed-martial arts had 1 athlete (McGregor, $99 million)
Cricket had 1 athlete (Virat Kohli, $24 million)
Track- had 1(Usain Bolt, $31 million)
Serena Williams is the richest female athlete with estimated earnings of $18 million.
