SHOCKING HAPPENINGS IN GHANA- Pregnant women take pills to bleach unborn babies' skin in their womb

This trend seems to be widely accepted by many women because it is a well-known fact that most Ghanaian babies are born dark skinned.

The pills are allegedly taken by the women and it works by creating a chemical reaction which leads in reduction of hormones secretion responsible for dark pigmentation of the unborn child, making them light-skinned.

There are quite a handful of drugs that can be used to this effect, but the most talked about drug is called glutathione, it is meant to be a food supplement, but it has been manipulated by people to meet their interest.

The Ghana‘s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) had this to say as regards this harmful “we want the general public to know that no product has been approved by the FDA in the form of a tablet to lighten the skin of the unborn child”.

As observed and explained by medical practitioners, the use of the drug in question is illegal, as it can cause major changes in the child such as birth defects, including damage to the baby’s limb and internal organs.

The FDA’s head of cosmetics and household chemicals Emmanuel Nkrumah, said at a media-sensitisation workshop on unapproved bleaching pills and products “The use of these drugs has gone to an alarming stage; it is ignorance that is making people do so”.

“The only things that you take orally should be food, toothpaste and mouthwash, and not bleaching pills,” Nkrumah further said.

According to the FDA, the practice is rapidly growing in Ghana, with the drugs often smuggled into the country inside luggage in large quantities.

The Ghana police and other security agencies are working hand in hand to arrest and prosecute companies and individuals in possession of the illegal drugs.

The final question is this…Is it what the risk?

Black is beauty, be black and proud. If you are light skinned embrace it. We are all beautifully made.
