Research has shown that women with poor diets before pregnancy are more likely to give birth prematurely than women who have healthy diets. Fruits, vegetables, meat etc are good sources of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are important for both you and your unborn child, but it is important to note that there are certain fruits and vegetable that must be avoided during pregnancy.
FOOD TO AVOID DURING PREGNANCY
Unwashed Vegetables and Fruits: clean vegetables and cut away areas that are scarred or bruised eat only fresh fruits and vegetables.
Unripe PawPaw (or Semi Ripe PawPaw): Properly ripe pawpaw is safe for eating while unripe and semi-ripe pawpaw must be totally avoided, unripe pawpaw has latex, which can cause uterine contractions.
Pineapple: Pineapples are a rich source of bromelain. It may lead to some allergic reactions or such as diarrhoea. It is generally advisable to avoid the intake of pineapple when pregnant.
Meat: Raw or not properly cooked meat/poultry/seafood must be avoided during pregnancy.
Fish with Mercury: Eating fish is generally good for both mothers and babies during pregnancy. The problem is some fish contain really high mercury levels that may be harmful to your unborn baby. Mackerel must be avoided.
Alcohol: Please avoid alcoholic beverages no matter the percentage it contains. It can cause foetal alcohol syndrome and can damage the child’s brain and it could later affect the behavioural and learning capability of the baby.
Caffeine: Avoid things that contain caffeine. Take plenty water, juices, and milk rather than caffeinated beverages.
Eggs: If you must eat egg, boil the eggs properly until they are white and the yolks are solid. Do not consume raw eggs. Raw eggs can be found in mayonnaise, ice creams or custards, Avoid consuming these food products during pregnancy.
Honey: It can cause infant botulism, a type of paralytic disease. It is better to avoid the consumption of honey during pregnancy.
Smoking – This act is very harmful to the health of a baby. If you smoke, you are advised to quit the act during pregnancy. Smoking can cause SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), respiratory problems, low birth weight, and also premature birth.
Do not eat food that has expired. Avoid frozen food, avoid very hot food.
